    DEATH: James Knox Polk Whalen was living with his son, William Harrison, in Daisy, Tennessee when he died. The year of birth given on his death certificate is 1841. According to the 1850 and the 1860 US census, James Knox Polk Whalen was born in 1846. The 1900 US census gives his birthdate as May 1840.

    MILITARY: Served in the Confederate Army as a private in Company H of the First Regiment Tennessee Calvary Co. "H" Formerly Co. "G", Thomas North Carolina Legion. Organized September 24, 1862 from Jefferson County. Captains David Neff, T. Coursey.

    MILITARY: WHALEN, James K. P. Co. H, 1 E.T. Cav. (Carter's) Born June, 1845 in Jefferson Co. and raised there. Enl. at Dandridge, TN about Aug. 1, 1863. Capt. at or near Mossy Creek, Mch. 27, 1864 and imprisoned at Camp Morton until June 12, 1865. About one year aftr war he left TN and went to KY and stayed 2 years before moving to IL and eventually back to TN. Res. Sherman Heights.     BIRTH: Tombstone in Hensley Cemetary (Internet) records 21 Nov 1928 as date of death, but William's death certificate clearly states 20 Oct 1928 as the date of his death. It further states that his burial date was 22 Oct 1928. The year of birth on tombstone in Hensley Cemetary is false. On his death certificate, William's age on 20 Oct 1928 is given as 46. This corresponds to the year of birth recorded in the 1900 Federal Census.

    DEATH: According to his death certificate, he died from a fall off the Medical Arts Building in Chattanooga, Tennessee - which was under construction at the time - suffering a "bruise thru chest & internal hemmorage with contributory shock." The Medical Arts Building is in McCallie Ave directly across from the University of Chattanooga. In 1981 it was bought by and incorporated into the First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.

    BIOGRAPHY: Violet Whalen reports that her father was a carpenter, but also painted. When she was born, the family lived near Billy Goat Hill in East Chattanooga. William used to make homebrew beer. His family was from Harriman, Tennessee. William used to hire a black lady called Aunt Kelly to help Martha Alice Manning with the children after childbirth. Raymond Whalen wouldn't eat her biscuits because he was afraid that the black from her hands would come off on the biscuits.

    According to John Ray Whalen's son, his father left home because his father's second wife, Mary Lane, was mean to the kids. Harry Whalen described her as a "hellcat." Mary Lane is said to have beaten Stella Whalen a lot and James Knox Polk Whalen eventually left her and went to live with his son, William Harrison Whalen.
