Jennie Pickett Howell, 94, of Auburn, IN and formerly of Decatur County, IN died on Tuesday, June 25 at DeKalb Health in Auburn.
She was a Home Economics Teacher for 30 years retiring from South Decatur High School. She previously taught at New Point High School and other Decatur County schools as well as schools in Mississippi before moving to Decatur County in 1954. She graduated from Berry High School and Berry College in Rome, Ga.
She was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church, a charter member of Decatur Co. Teachers Organization, the Rural Couples Club, Decatur Co. Farm Bureau, and the IN & Decatur Co. Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Lucky Twelve Extension Homemakers Club and the Lois Chapter of Eastern Star. In the summer of 1944, she worked in the chemical lab at Oak Ridge, TN.
Jennie (Peggy) Pickett Howell was born May 31, 1919 to Daniel Foster and Renia Jane (Gross) Pickett in Salecreek, Tennessee. She married James Francis Howell on September 17th, 1944 at Berry College in Rome, Ga. He died on April 14, 2006.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law – Dr. James Foster (Kim) Howell of Batesville, IN; two daughters and sons-in-law – Ira Jane (Bob) Johnson of Howe, IN and Jamie Frances (Bernie) Sukala of Auburn, IN. Grandchildren include six grandsons: Andrew (Teresa) Johnson (Cincinnati, OH), James Bryce Howell (Fairborn, OH), Scott Foster (Mandy Bauerle) Howell (Cincinnati, OH), Christopher (Jessica ) Johnson (W. Lafayette, IN ), David (Jamie) Howell (Jericho, VT.) , and Tim Johnson (Howe, IN); and one granddaughter; Erin Leigh Sukala (Auburn, IN). Also surviving are five great-grandchildren – Addison and Sarah Johnson (Cincinnati OH); Jack and Frannie Johnson (Lafayette IN); and Graham Abaied Howell (Jericho, VT). Additional survivors include a brother - Ed Pickett (Loganton, PA); two sister-in-laws – Clara Pickett (Brownsburg, IN) and Monte Howell Fricks (Rome, Ga.); and one brother-in-law – Ken (Lynette) Gwinn (Greencastle, IN) ; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers – Glenn, Fred, and Louis; four sisters - Nellie, Nora, Belle, and Ruby; and one grandson – Cristian James Sukala.
Calling will be at Gilliland – Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg IN on Friday, June 28 from 4-7:00pm and Saturday, June 29 at 10:00am prior to services at 10:30am also at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Smyrna Lutheran Cemetery, Decatur Co., IN.
