Vernon Louise Stewart, 88, of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn. went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 1, 2010, at home.
She was a lifelong resident of Soddy-Daisy, and was the daughter of the late Richard and Rosa Mae "Cricket" Lasley.
She was a member of South Soddy Baptist Church.
As a young woman, Vernon was a well-known singer as "Sister Sue with The Sunshine Gang" of WDOD radio station and was offered a career with the Grand Ole Opry by Mr. Roy Acuff. She declined the offer to stay in Soddy-Daisy and raise her family. Later, she became a hairdresser (having a shop in her home) but continued using her singing talents in churches until just a few years ago, at which time her health began to deteriorate.
Vernon was preceded in death by her husband, Claude M. Stewart; brothers, Lloyd and Freddy Lasley; sister, Frances Curvin; and sons-in-law, Stuart Levi and Jim Farley.
She is survived by her daughters, Judy Levi and Claudia Farley; sons, Tony (Midge) and Eddie (Jeanette) Stewart; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Freida Sutherland; and brother, Hayden Lasley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010, in the Legacy Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Don Lasley officiating.
Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by locally owned and operated Legacy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 8911 Dallas Hollow Road, Soddy-Daisy, TN.
