February 15, 1925 - May 6, 2015
E.J. Hamill, Jr., 90, of Chattanooga, passed away at his home on Wendesday, May, 6, 2015. He joined the Army in 1943 and was trained as a radio operator. He was a proud member of the 29th Infantry Division that stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and liberated cities and concentration camps throughout Europe. He earned three bronze medals for his brave service. After the war, he returned home and finished high school, then married his sweetheart, Mary Lou Burkhart. He was employed by Crane Company, then by Wheland Foundry, and retired in 1983. He and Mary had a passion for travel, both overseas and stateside. They traveled to every state except for Alaska. World travel included Israel, Greece, Turkey, Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Germany, Canada, and Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosa and Ephraim Sr and his dearly beloved daughter-in-law, Peggy Hamill. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary Lou Hamill, his children, Susan Izell (Frank) and David Lamar Hamill (Wanda), granddaughter, Kelly Izell (Kate) and grandson, Adam Izell.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at National Cemetery with Phillip Ferris officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 10, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
