Jimmy Vernon Gentry, 64, of Sale Creek, died on Sunday, May 1, 2011. He was the son of the late Arnold and Treeva Gentry. Jimmy was a native of Sale Creek and graduated from Sale Creek High School in 1965. He was a well known softball player in the Chattanooga area, known as “Turk”, playing for St. Luke United Methodist Church, Duggan & Duggan, Burnette & Associates, Miller Lite, Union Fork Baptist Church and Gem Vest Jewelers. Jimmy retired from Wheeland Foundry in 1979 and from Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, Security Division, in 1992. He was a former member of the FOP and Sale Creek Masonic Lodge. Jimmy never met a stranger and was always willing to help those who needed a helping helping hand. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Survivors include his wife of loving and devoted of 17 years, Linda Gallagher Gentry; son, Dean (Kelly) Gentry of Chattanooga,; daughter, Ashley (Blake) Smithey of Soddy-Daisy; brothers, Tom Gentry of Dayton and Dwight (Gail) Gentry of Charleston, TN.; grandchildren, Zachery Gentry of Hixson, Hannah Gentry of Chattanooga, Whitney Dye of Soddy-Daisy and Haley Hall of Chattanooga; sisters-in-law, Mary Gallagher of Spring City, TN., Stephanie (Terry) Elesa of Spring City and Barbara Gentry of Cleveland, TN.; nephew, Tech Sgt. TJ (Rhonda) Manning of Minot, ND.; special friends, Charles (Connie) Martin of Soddy-Daisy and numerous other family members as well.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Gladden Coe officiating. Interment will follow in Welsh Rogers Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the Doctors and Nurses at Erlanger Medical Center, MSICU Department.
