  1. 1.  Joseph Albert Looney was born in in Tennessee; died on 21 Oct 1895 in Zalma, Bollinger County, Missouri.

    Notes:

    Joseph died in late October of 1895, and is buried at Hall's Cemeteryat Gipsy, Bollinger County, Missouri. Almeda is buried to his left in anunmarked grave. His son Andrew Looney is buried next to him. There isalso an unmarked grave outlined with rocks. This is probably Andrew'swife, Ibb Ellen Kerr Looney.
    Joseph served in the Civil War and fought for the Union. He was aPrivate in Company I, 2nd Infantry Regiment of the 2nd TennesseeVolunteers. Most of Company I enrolled at Sale Creek, Hamilton County,Tennessee and mustered n at Cumberland Ford, Kentucky, 28 February 1862.Muster out date not known. Muster rolls of the regiment are defective, alarge portion of them were captured along with the Regiment atRogersville on 6 November 1863. In his declaration for pension, madeJuly 12 1893, Joseph stated he was hurt by a wagon turning over while ona retreat from Cumberland Gap to the Ohio River when in service.Physical description was given as 5'11" with light complexion, light hairand blue eyes.
    Almeda filed for and received a pension for Joseph's Civil Wayservice. On the pension application the mustering out date is listed as31 October 1864. Age 20 (which would make his birth date 1844) andother personal descriptions not of record. A very interesting medicalnote: Medical records show him treated July 25 to August 31, 1864 fortraumatic stricture of the urethra. Says when a boy was crushed abouthis privates in fall between two millstones. Surgery was performedincluding a circumcision and removal of a tumor.
    According to Dessie Looney Perkins, her grandfather, Joseph Looney,left home at age 14. None of the children or grandchildren knew anythingabout the Looney family.

    Joseph married Almeda Penney on 20 Jun 1860 in Igou Ferry, Hamilton County, Tennessee. Almeda (daughter of Thomas Mathias Penney and Malinda Lindsey Gann) was born on 22 Nov 1844 in Hamilton County, Tennessee; died on 23 Feb 1923 in Zalma, Bollinger County, Missouri.     Notes:

    Records cannot be found for the marriage of Almeda Penney and JosephLooney. Among Almeda's pension application papers is an attest from theCounty Clerk of Hamilton County. It states that all records prior to1864 were destroyed during the late (Civil) war.
